'World's Most Controversial Restaurant' to Close; Operators Cite End of 'Affordable' Las Vegas Indulgences
Owner Jon Basso cited rising costs and corporate greed, saying he is seeking investors for a possible relocation.
On Monday, owner Jon Basso announced the permanent closure of the Heart Attack Grill on Fremont Street after 15 years at the Neonopolis shopping mall.
Basso cited "corporate greed" for the closure, claiming major casinos have "intentionally priced the average person out" of affordable indulgence in Las Vegas.
The Heart Attack Grill featured nurses as staff and served the 19,000-calorie Octuple Bypass Burger, while offering free food to customers weighing more than 350 pounds.
Neonopolis owner Rohit Joshi reported five major chains already interested in the vacant space, while surprised tourists arrived on Tuesday hoping to dine at the shuttered landmark.
Basso is exploring relocation to other cities, though economist Mike Pequeen suggested shifting health trends, including popularity of weight loss drugs like GLP-1s, may impact future demand.
