Controversial Vancouver Island Slide Returns for a Third Time
The slide’s return follows slope changes and new signage after repeated safety concerns and injuries involving children outside the recommended age range.
- The metal spiral slide returned to Quarry Park on July 21 after Colwood crews reattached the structure to the castle, marking the third attempt at a permanent installation following previous safety removals.
- Previous removals occurred after playground provider Kinsol identified specification failures and parents reported injuries, including Sarah Lalonde, who broke her leg using the slide with her four-year-old son on her lap.
- To improve safety, Colwood and Kinsol modified the slide's slope and angles, while new interactive signs at multiple locations reinforce the structure is designed for children aged five to 12 years old.
- Grandmother Sharon, visiting with her granddaughter, welcomed the return, saying "I think its great for the kids" and emphasizing that park visitors should follow the clear signage and rules.
- Beyond the playground, Quarry Park continues expanding amenities, with construction nearing completion on a new washroom building and fresh turf recently laid on the soccer fields.
