Donald Trump's new tariffs against about 70 states came into force on Thursday. Switzerland, for which a tariff of 39 percent now applies, is particularly affected. Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter's lightning visit to Washington could no longer avert this heavy blow for the export-oriented Swiss industry. The state press licks the wounds.
The Swiss delegation is back from their emergency trip to the US. The tariffs cannot avert them. Trump and his trade minister Lutnick are not even available for talks. Nevertheless, the small, export-oriented country does not want to rely on retaliation measures.
A last-minute negotiation attempt by the Federal President in Washington remains unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the Confederation does not want to know about concrete countermeasures such as its own tariffs.
Continue discussions, support industries affected by additional duties and relieve the companies in general: The Federal Council is relying on this strategy in the customs dispute with the USA. It intends to continue to refrain from countermeasures, as it was called on Thursday.
