Conservative motion seeking more diesel relief defeated in House of Commons
The motion sought to scrap federal diesel taxes until July 1, 2027, and 196 MPs voted against it.
On Wednesday, October 7, 2026, the House of Commons defeated a Conservative motion seeking expanded federal relief on diesel fuel, with 196 votes against and 133 in favour.
Conservatives had tabled the motion on Tuesday, calling for the elimination of federal taxes on diesel until Canada Day 2027 and emergency pre-permitting for refineries and storage facilities.
Conservative shadow energy minister Carol Anstey argued Canadians pay 24 cents more per litre for diesel than Americans, and 31 cents more than the global average, as prices hover at around $2.60.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance Ryan Turnbull defended government actions, citing global factors for high prices, while Atlantic Economic Development Minister Richard Bragdon warned higher costs strain Atlantic fishers.
Ottawa previously extended the fuel excise tax suspension until January 31, 2027, followed by a 50 percent reduction in the regular rate through March 31, 2027, saving Canadians 4 cents per litre on diesel.
