Search for grizzly behind ‘extraordinary attack’ on B.C. school group is called off
DNA evidence ruled out four captured bears and no sightings were reported for five days, prompting conservation officers to end the search after an attack on a school group.
- The B.C. Conservation Officer Service announced Friday that it is no longer actively trying to capture the grizzly bear responsible for the attack near Bella Coola, British Columbia, the Dec. 5, 2025 statement said.
- Because bears begin denning at this time of year, forensic basis DNA and other forensic evidence excluded four recently captured bears, and there have been no sightings in Bella Coola for five days.
- Search teams captured at least eight bears in the past five days, and samples were sent to the University of Alberta forensics lab.
- More than $100,000 has been raised to support the families of those injured, and a full‑time conservation officer has been posted in Bella Coola, about 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.
- The service said it will continue to monitor and remains committed to the community, while Kevin Van Damme welcomed questions after an information session attended by more than 100 people.
