Lawmaker Says US Deported a 2-Month-Old Baby with Bronchitis
The infant was deported despite claims of severe illness; DHS states the child was medically cleared and given care instructions, with removal following a judge's order.
- On Tuesday, ICE deported the infant with bronchitis to Mexico with his 16-month-old sister and parents, and Castro called it `To unnecessarily deport a sick baby and his entire family is heinous`.
- Border Patrol apprehended Mireya Stefani Lopez-Sanchez, the mother, near Eagle Pass, Texas on Jan. 21, and a judge issued a final order of removal on Feb. 8.
- DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said Wednesday the child was in `stable condition and medically cleared for removal` and pediatricians gave parents a nasal saline spray and a nasal bulb syringe.
- A DHS spokesperson defended the process, saying McLaughlin confirmed `She received full due process` and a judge found the family's claims invalid.
- The detention issue has come under greater scrutiny since last year, when court filings reported contaminated food, lack of medical care, and hundreds of immigrant children held beyond court limits.
