Congressional committee on China asks Wizards and Capitals owner to cut ties with Alibaba
Rep. John Moolenaar said Monumental Sports & Entertainment should end any business relationship with Alibaba after the Pentagon labeled it a Chinese military company.
Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., chair of the U.S. House Select Committee on China, asked Monumental Sports & Entertainment owner Ted Leonsis to cut ties with Alibaba by July 15, seeking confirmation the company has discontinued all business relationships with the Chinese tech giant.
The Pentagon designated Alibaba a 'Chinese military company' last month, citing a mission to 'support China,' prompting the firm to sue for removal from a list of 188 entities ranging from state-owned defense businesses to private-sector tech companies.
Alibaba maintains ties to other American professional sports teams beyond Washington's Wizards and Capitals, including the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, which were co-founded by Joseph Tsai.
Officials from MSE have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the committee's demand to confirm discontinuation of all business relationships with Alibaba and its affiliates.
The committee has previously scrutinized sports-related Alibaba sponsorships, raising concerns with the International Olympic Committee and former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem regarding the Los Angeles Olympics.
