Congo's Ebola outbreak surpasses 4,000 cases
WHO experts recommend Ervebo for a randomized trial after animal studies suggested it may protect against Bundibugyo deaths.
- Wiza Bondele, a 29-year-old infection control worker, continues reporting to an Ebola treatment hospital in Ituri province despite receiving no salary since mid-May, disinfecting contaminated areas among hundreds of unpaid health workers.
- The fastest-spreading Ebola outbreak on record is linked to the Bundibugyo virus, for which no approved vaccines or treatments exist; delayed detection allowed more than 500 suspected cases to spread between mid-January and May 15.
- Bondele has not received his promised $510 monthly salary; even colleagues who were paid report incomplete amounts. After running out of fuel on his motorcycle, he walked 13 kilometers to work with shoes that fell apart.
- Hundreds of Ebola response workers in Bunia staged strikes and protests in recent weeks, abandoning health facilities and disrupting care. Dr. Adelard Lufungula, operations manager for the government's Ebola response, said last month that workers would be paid through mobile money.
- Confirmed cases have reached 4,053, including 1,850 deaths, making this the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record. Cases span five provinces, with Ituri accounting for nearly 90% of all infections.
