Congo river barge capsizes, leaving 64 people missing
The barge departed Bena Dibele with about 120 passengers; turbulent river currents and possible overloading are suspected factors, with 56 survivors reported, officials said.
On Monday, a river barge sank at the mouth of the Sankuru River in Kasai province, local administrator François Ahaka told The Associated Press Wednesday.
The barge left Bena Dibele on Nov. 13 en route to Kinshasa, more than 800 kilometers away.
It initially carried 120 passengers, officials said, with rescuers recovering 56 survivors while 64 people remain missing as search efforts continue.
The September deaths, totalling at least 193, point to a pattern of deadly river accidents in northwestern Congo, state media reported.
Safety shortcomings such as scarce life jackets and night navigation increase the risks of capsizings, as vessels are often overloaded and night travel complicates rescue operations.
