South Africa: Deputy Minister Mabe Attends the Comrades Marathon
Gerda Steyn and George Kusche each earned record bonuses after breaking the women’s and men’s Up-run marks, with Kusche also setting a fastest pace record.
On Sunday, Gerda Steyn won the 2026 Women's Comrades Marathon, completing the 85.77km 'Up' run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in a record 5:44:53.
By breaking her own 2024 'Up' record of 5:49:46, Steyn solidified her status as a dominant force in South African long-distance running.
In the men's race, South African George Kusche set a new 'Up' record, finishing in 5:15:56 and earning a pay day of R2.32 million.
Earnings for the champions included R925,000 for the victory, with additional payouts for record-breaking 'fastest average pace' performances and being top-placed South African finishers.
Defending winner Piet Wiersma of The Netherlands finished second in 5:19:36, while the top five men all broke the previous 'Up' record.
