Community voices frustration as Burnaby hospital expansion project is put on hold
The project would add 160 beds and a cancer care centre, but officials say it needs more planning before construction can resume.
Dozens of protesters gathered in a Burnaby park to rally against the provincial government's cancellation of construction contracts for Phase 2 of the hospital expansion, which was slated to add 160 beds and a cancer care centre.
The B.C. government announced in February that it would slow down several health construction projects amid a $13.3 billion deficit, with Infrastructure Minister Bowinn stating the work was "re-paced or rescheduled."
Langley-Walnut Grove MLA Misty Van Popta, the shadow critic for infrastructure, argued the province cancelled all associated contracts, effectively returning the project to a mere concept with no clear restart date.
David Xie said residents lack a "fully-functioning modern hospital," forcing locals to travel to other cities for care during emergencies despite Burnaby being the third largest city in B.C.
Premier David Eby said earlier in May that expansion plans are not dead despite the contract cancellation, while Infrastructure Minister Bowinn asserted Sunday that the project remains within the provincial capital plan.
