As word gets out, Hike for Hospice continues to grow

As support swells for a local hospice facility, so do its annual fundraising events.

Community support for the future Norfolk Haldimand Community Hospice was on full display this weekend as hundreds of residents took part in the annual Hike for Hospice fundraiser. Organizers reported that more than $56,000 had been raised by 1 p.m. Sunday, with additional donations still expected to be received and counted in the coming days. The event attracted approximately 340 participants who took part as members of 26 different teams, all helping raise funds for the proposed hospice facility. Fundraisng Chair Tracey Webster told us most people out for a walk that day were there for similar reasons. One of the most significant announcements surrounding the project came with news of a recent anonymous donation. We spoke to Shanon Porter – Co-Chair of Capital Committee and member of Building Committee. The contribution represents a major boost for fundraising efforts as organizers continue working toward bringing a residential hospice to the region. The Norfolk Haldimand Community Hospice project has been years in the making and aims to provide end-of-life care and support closer to home for local families. Organizers say momentum continues to build, with fundraising efforts progressing and community support remaining strong. Executive Director Andrea Binkle spoke to us about what they see happening over the next few weeks. The walk also saw support from local government as well. Haldimand County Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley told us there was a person reason why the Hospice project is so near and dear to her heart. Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady knows this is something the community has been wanting for some time. She is happy to see it progressing so well. With another successful Hike for Hospice now complete and significant donations continuing to come in, organizers say the community’s generosity is helping move the vision closer to becoming a reality.
