Communities and agencies celebrate delisting of Nipigon Bay as an Area of Concern

After nearly four decades of restoration efforts, around 20,000 hectares of western Nipigon Bay and part of the Nipigon River were removed as an Area of Concern (AOC) in the Great Lakes on Aug. 28. In 1987, Nipigon Bay was designated as an AOC after hydroelectric development on the Nipigon River, log-driving debris, former Red Rock pulp and paper mill discharges and municipal wastewater contaminated sediments, degraded water quality and reduced fish habitat.
