Commanders, HKS unveil conceptual renderings of new stadium at RFK campus

  • On Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, the Washington Commanders and lead architect HKS unveiled five concept renderings showing a planned stadium on the former RFK Stadium site.
  • HKS, selected as lead architect in November, designed a roofed, year-round venue for sports, concerts and community events that honors RFK Stadium legacy and involves community engagement sessions.
  • Around 65,000 seats are planned, with a transparent domed roof that stays lower east-west to preserve views of the U.S. Capitol and adjacent monuments, and the venue could hold up to 70,000 people.
  • The design moves to the District’s approval process, including review by the National Capital Planning Commission and U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, with demolition nearly complete and vertical construction slated to start in spring 2027.
  • Broader campus plans include 5,000 to 6,000 new homes, including 1,500 to 1,900 affordable units, and at least 30% of the site devoted to parks and recreation.
