Columbia Shuswap Regional District Keeping Separate Time Zone for Rural Golden
The unanimous vote keeps Area A and rural Golden on the same clock as the town after 89% of survey respondents backed ending time changes.
The Columbia Shuswap Regional District board voted unanimously on Oct. 15 to adopt permanent Mountain Daylight Time for Area A and rural Golden, keeping the region synced with East Kootenay and Alberta.
Initially, the Town planned to adopt Mountain Standard Time to match the rest of the province, but Council reconsidered in Sept. to prioritize alignment with East Kootenay and Alberta instead.
A survey found 89 per cent of respondents wanted to end annual time changes, with 55 per cent supporting permanent Mountain Daylight Time despite Karen Cathcart acknowledging concerns about darker mornings.
Drivers will continue changing their clocks on the ride between Revelstoke and Golden come Nov., as the Regional District board chose not to pursue new highway lighting after The Ministry cited funding limits.
Most of the province west of the Columbia Mountains and Rockies will remain on Pacific Time starting Nov. 1, as twice-annual time changes end for the province at large.
