Canada, UAE sign trade deal as Carney seeks new trading partners
The deal lowers barriers and boosts investment, with preferential access covering 99% of current Canadian exports, officials said.
On Tuesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan formally signed a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in Ottawa, lowering trade barriers between the nations.
Carney pursued the deal to double Canada's non-U.S. trade over the next decade, following economic tensions with the United States and stalled negotiations with Washington.
International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu and UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi signed the pact, which removes duties on more than 97% of tariff lines covering over 99% of current Canadian exports.
The signing enables Canada's Parliament to ratify the agreement, while both nations inked several memoranda of understanding to strengthen cooperation in energy, defense, and diplomatic development.
Sheikh Khaled's visit follows his recent trip to Greece, where the UAE agreed to invest $16.8 billion in joint initiatives, reflecting the nation's broader diplomatic strategy to deepen global partnerships.
