Small Town Near Denver Plans to Install Gate to Reduce Crashes
Town leaders say 1,200 daily vehicles and safety concerns prompted the move after Denver and Littleton urged a pause.
On Monday, the Bow Mar board of trustees gave final approval to a contract for a controlled-access gate on South Sheridan Boulevard, with the barrier expected to be operational by mid-January.
A town-commissioned study found about 2,000 vehicles entering the community daily, and residents cite a recent incident where an SUV crashed into Bowles Lake as evidence that current safety measures are insufficient.
Denver City Councilman Kevin Flynn and Littleton Mayor Kyle Schlachter have criticized the plan, with Flynn warning Denver might install its own gate to bar Bow Mar residents from northern routes.
Schlachter told The New York Times the proposal is 'hurtful,' signaling to neighbors, 'You're not welcome in our community,' while Denver Mayor Mike Johnston urged finding a solution that works for everyone.
The dispute reflects broader tensions across the fast-growing Western United States regarding development; construction on the Sheridan entrance could begin by Thanksgiving, though the town will evaluate the project's impact before considering additional gates.
