Conservatives call for cuts to permanent residency admissions in immigration plan
Canada’s Conservatives are calling for temporary resident departure tracking, greater cooperation with provinces, and lower permanent resident admissions in the next immigration plan.
Michelle Rempel Garner said the government should focus more on integrating newcomers, blamed government policies for rising anti-immigrant sentiment, and called for rebuilding trust around immigration.
The previous immigration plan targeted 380,000 permanent residents annually from 2026 through 2028.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the government “will not budge” on making immigration levels sustainable.
The Conservatives call on the government to put in place a system to track temporary residents' departures, to strengthen collaboration with the provinces and to further reduce the number of admissions to permanent residence in the next immigration quota plan.
