College Baseball Notebook: NCAA urges coaches to not cancel games to protect position for tournament
The subcommittee said cancellations for metric reasons could draw scrutiny and negative evaluation as teams protect NCAA tournament positioning.
On Wednesday, May 6, Michael Alford, chair of the Division I Baseball Oversight Committee, warned coaches against canceling non-conference games to manipulate selection data or metrics.
Scheduling maneuvers allow teams to avoid low-reward matchups against mid- or low-major opponents, since a win would not help the Rating Percentage Index while a loss would hurt tournament positioning.
Games canceled to avoid metric impacts will be discussed during the Division I Baseball Championship Subcommittee's subjective evaluations and could negatively impact a team's tournament positioning.
Despite the warning, Boston College canceled Tuesday's nonconference game against UMass Lowell, while Virginia Tech opted out of its contract with Marshall and Central Florida canceled its contest against Bethune-Cookman.
The NCAA Selection Committee uses the RPI Rankings system to weigh tournament brackets, incorporating a team's winning percentage, opponents' winning percentage, and opponents' opponents' winning percentage.
