Cold slushies take the heat out of summer

LOWELL — In the kitchen of Eliot Church, Claire Smith is known as the “Slushy Queen.” The affectionate moniker describes her daily mixes of ice-cold slushies to help the homeless clients and others who walk through the doors to the church’s Day Center Program beat the oppressive heat. “Nothing beats a slushy on a hot day,” Smith said. “Cherry is the favorite flavor. Sometimes we mix it with cranberry, add a little sugar, add the ice and blend.” …
