Binance Tells EU Users It Will No Longer Provide Services After Failing to Secure MiCA License
Binance said customers in four EU countries should withdraw funds as it seeks a MiCA licence after missing the bloc’s July 1 deadline.
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, notified customers in France, Italy, Poland, and Spain that services will be suspended next week due to lacking the mandatory MiCA license required by July 1.
The exchange withdrew its license application in Greece, failing to secure authorization across all 27 European Union member states; Binance now aims to approach France for regulatory approval in coming months.
Despite service restrictions, the company assured users their funds face no risk, stating, "Your assets remain safe and secure, and will remain accessible at all times." The email reassured customers amid the suspension.
This regulatory setback follows previous legal challenges, including Binance's 2023 guilty plea to the Justice Department for money laundering. Founder Changpeng Zhao served a four-month prison sentence in 2024 after the firm agreed to pay $4.3bn in penalties.
Scrutiny extends to Binance's Irish subsidiaries, which are over a year late filing annual returns. Management attributed the delay to a scarcity of audit firms with specialized technical expertise to evaluate large-scale digital asset businesses.
