Coinbase says user funds are safe after vendor exposes customer data
Coinbase said a small subset of customer contact data was exposed at Amplitude, while South Korean firms also reported separate breaches.
- On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, four financial and cryptocurrency firms reported data breaches, including Coinbase, Bithumb, Mirae Asset Global Investments, and Daishin Securities. Coinbase attributed exposure of a "small subset" of customer contact data to its third-party analytics provider, Amplitude.
- Three of the incidents occurred in South Korea, where Daishin Securities confirmed 38,490 customers had personal information exposed after hackers targeted its remote brokerage server. Bithumb and Mirae Asset Global Investments also disclosed unauthorized access to their internal systems.
- Working with the Financial Security Institute, Daishin examined approximately 60,000 requests disguised as legitimate traffic over ten days before confirming the breach on October 26. Regulators identified security incidents at 16 financial businesses earlier this month.
- Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, commonly referred to as CZ, warned that leaked information could be exploited for phishing and social engineering. He recommended replacing SMS-based two-factor authentication with authenticator apps or hardware security keys.
- Coinbase clarified that its own systems were not compromised and customer funds remain safe, with the exchange notifying impacted customers via email as required by law. Authorities have begun inspecting the data breach at Mirae Asset Global Investments.
