CN Tower dims its lights as tributes honour fallen Toronto officer Marc Pinizzotto
The tower dimmed its lights for five minutes each hour as hundreds of officers honored the 43-year-old constable killed in a raid.
On Thursday, Toronto police Const. Marc Pinizzotto died after being shot while investigating a fourth-floor apartment building. Police charged 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett with first-degree murder, while searching for second suspect 19-year-old Zara Jabbi.
Officers were conducting an investigation into multiple shootings, including one at the U.S. Consulate in March, when the fatal encounter occurred. Pinizzotto was reportedly the first officer through the door when the suspect discharged his firearm.
The Special Investigations Unit invoked its mandate, noting one suspect discharged his firearm at Pinizzotto; a second officer then struck the suspect. Hundreds of officers stood shoulder to shoulder Thursday as they escorted Pinizzotto's body from Sunnybrook hospital to the coroner's office.
Linda Pinizzotto called her son an "extraordinary" hero in a Friday Instagram tribute, describing him as an incredible father, husband, and friend. Prime Minister Mark Carney, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, and Ontario Premier Doug Ford offered condolences on social media.
The CN Tower dimmed its bright lights for five minutes every hour Thursday night to honor the fallen officer. This tragedy follows the recent death of Ontario Provincial Police Const. Tarun Bali, struck by a vehicle near Hearst.
