Angel Martinez Hits Leadoff Homer, Parker Messick Has Solid Outing in Guardians’ 4-2 Win over Angels
Angel Martinez hit his first career leadoff homer and Parker Messick allowed two runs in 6 2/3 innings as Cleveland completed the sweep.
On Wednesday, the Guardians beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 to complete a three-game series sweep at Progressive Field, highlighted by Angel Martinez's leadoff home run.
Cleveland's win improved its record against the Angels to 30-4 at Progressive Field since 2015, the best home mark by any major league team, while the Angels have dropped 11 of 12 road games.
Rookie Parker Messick allowed two runs and four hits over 6 2/3 innings, with catcher Austin Hedges praising his ability to adjust midgame: "He was able to kind of get away with not moving as well as he could have."
Manager Stephen Vogt credited the team's pitching and timely hitting, noting, "Our pitching was outstanding and we got hits when we needed to," as relievers Eric Sabrowski and Cade Smith secured the win with Smith recording his 13th save.
Following an off day, the Angels open a three-game series against the Dodgers with RHP Jack Kochanowicz starting, while the Guardians host Cincinnati on Friday with RHP Tanner Bibee scheduled to start the series opener.
