BC Hydro’s 2025 Call for Power Targets Clean/renewable Energy and Indigenous Equity - Electrical Business
BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUL 28 – Bill 14 mandates at least 25% First Nations ownership and aims to add 5,000 gigawatt-hours annually to B.C.'s grid with streamlined permitting, enough to power 500,000 homes.
BC Hydro is issuing a request for proposals for the next round of major provincial power projects, requiring at least 25 per cent First Nations ownership and generation of clean or renewable energy.
At the legislature, the B.C. Greens voted against the bill, which passed by one vote with the Speaker's tie-breaking, amid opposition from First Nations over lack of consultation.
For the current round, all wind and solar projects have no maximum size but a 40-megawatt minimum, unlike the first call which capped projects at 200 megawatts.
Under the streamlined legislation, all wind and solar projects in this round will be 'streamlined' under the B.C. Energy Regulator and exempt from environmental assessment, following the cabinet order.
Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix warned, 'There is urgency in this moment, urgency because we've seen in the United States an attack on Canadian sovereignty', as the second call to power seeks to add enough electricity to power 500,000 homes to B.C.'s electric grid.
