Class-action lawsuit in plant-based milk recall settled at $6.5M

The $6.5 million settlement compensates victims of the 2024 listeria outbreak linked to Silk and Great Value milks, including three deaths and 20 illnesses, court documents show.

  • Reporting on Nov. 21, 2025, LPC Avocats said a $6.5 million settlement was reached with Danone Inc., Walmart Canada Corp. and Intact Insurance Company, subject to court approval.
  • Linked to Silk and Great Value plant-based milks, the outbreak began in July of last year, prompting a national recall and reporting 20 illnesses and three deaths, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada.
  • Compensation will be distributed to qualifying class members, with settlement funds minus court-approved expenses ranging from $400 for symptoms up to 48 hours to $150,000 for severe complications, LPC Avocats said.
  • The Superior Court of Quebec authorized the class on Nov. 17, with a settlement-approval hearing set for Jan. 26, 2026, which could end similar British Columbia proceedings.
  • Danone Canada's head of communications said it `remains actively engaged in the legal proceedings to achieve a timely and appropriate resolution for its consumers,` and lawyer Joey Zukran said it is too soon to determine participation.
