CJI Surya Kant addresses NHRC Foundation Day event, participates in conference on human rights
On Oct 12, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant addressed the National Human Rights Commission Foundation Day, emphasizing that access to safe Water is fundamental to human dignity and fulfilling constitutional rights.
Describing the Commission as a keeper of the Constitution, Surya Kant noted the institution has registered more than 24 lakh cases and disposed of over 23 lakh cases over its 33-year existence.
Surya Kant argued that a mere tap connection is insufficient, stating "a dry pipe cannot fulfil the promise of water access," and warned that contaminated Water poses a threat to life and health.
The CJI stressed that ensuring Water access requires a collective approach involving governments, courts, and Human Rights Commissions, adding "water right must therefore be understood as a responsibility towards the future."
Highlighting efforts to improve accessibility, the Commission launched a mobile application and digitized records, allowing citizens to file complaints and track progress to reach people facing difficulties accessing courts.
