C.J. Gardner-Johnson ejected for spitting on Brock Bowers in latest controversy involving Bills safety
On Sunday, Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected from the game against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium after allegedly spitting on Brock Bowers.
A 2025 NFL standard turned spitting from a fines-only offense into a game-missing penalty, and officials disqualified Gardner-Johnson for unsportsmanlike conduct after video showed him spitting toward Bowers's area.
Legendary Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher called the act "selfish" during the CBS broadcast, while former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson labeled it "unprofessional" at halftime.
The ejection left the Bills without a defensive starter for the second half, and Gardner-Johnson may forfeit a game check of about $57,222 if the league confirms a suspension.
If confirmed, Gardner-Johnson would be the third player in two seasons to lose a game over spitting, joining Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter and Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase.
