City spokesperson says Crystal Pool is safe again, but remains closed until Tuesday
WorkSafeBC is investigating the cause after two chemicals combined, sending eight people to hospital and forcing an evacuation at the city’s only public pool.
- On Friday, eight people were hospitalized in stable condition after a chlorine gas exposure at Victoria's Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre, prompting evacuation of nearly 90 patrons and 13 staff.
- City spokesperson Colleen Mycroft says the investigation into which two chemicals combined to create the hazard is ongoing, marking the first fire department response of its kind in 25 years.
- Following the evacuation, the Capital Regional District HAZMAT Response Team safely disposed of the chemicals, while Island Health cleared emergency rooms at two local hospitals without initiating a Code Orange.
- Mycroft says the facility is now safe to enter but will remain closed until Tuesday morning as city staff work with WorkSafeBC to prepare for the 5:30 a.m. reopening.
- A referendum last February approved plans to borrow $170 million to replace Crystal Pool, which is more than 50 years old and scheduled to close in the fall of this year.
