Kansas City Council votes to remove suspended city manager Brian Platt
- On Thursday morning, Mayor Quinton Lucas and the Kansas City council voted unanimously in a private, virtual meeting to fire City Manager Brian Platt, as reported by KCTV.
- The decision to terminate Platt's employment came just over three weeks after he was initially suspended with pay following a nearly $1 million jury verdict against the city in a whistleblower lawsuit filed by former Communications Director Chris Hernandez, who alleged Platt suggested lying to the media.
- Platt, who began as Kansas City manager in December 2020, had signed a nearly 4.5-year contract extension in March 2024 with an annual salary of $308,000, making him the city's highest-paid employee.
- Mayor Lucas cited a loss of confidence in Platt's leadership abilities, failure to engage in risk mitigation strategies, unresponsiveness to elected officials, and failure to accept constructive criticism as reasons for the decision.
- Following the firing, Deputy City Manager Kimiko Gilmore was temporarily appointed as interim city manager, while Platt's attorney has suggested the possibility of a lawsuit over employment discrimination, amidst concerns about culture within City Hall and conflicting views on Platt's performance and support for marginalized communities.
