City Council Majority Says No To Head Tax, Property Tax Hike To Balance 2027 Budget

As budget talks heat up, 29 alderpeople sent a letter to Mayor Brandon Johnson outlining their opposition to measures like the corporate head tax, which Johnson unsuccessfully tried to relaunch last year.

"We will not support a head tax, or any levy that makes it costlier to keep and create jobs for Chicagoans. ... Our first demand is simple: reduce the recurring cost of City government before asking anyone to pay more."
