Chwalinska Emerges From Depression and Swiatek's Shadow to Shine at Roland Garros
The Polish qualifier reached her first Grand Slam semifinal after winning 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 and doubled her career prize money.
On Wednesday, unseeded Maja Chwalinska defeated 22nd-seeded Anna Kalinskaya 7-6 , 6-3 to reach the French Open semifinals, becoming only the second Polish woman to achieve this feat at Roland Garros.
After navigating three qualifying rounds, Chwalinska secured her Paris victory despite having won only two tour-level clay matches before this tournament.
Blustery conditions on Court Philippe Chatrier forced early service breaks before Chwalinska clinched the first set when Kalinskaya overcooked a loopy defensive backhand.
Reaching the semifinals has doubled Chwalinska's career earnings, securing 750,000 euros and surpassing her prior total of $864,030.
Chwalinska will face either world number one Aryna Sabalenka or 25th seed Diana Shnaider in Thursday's semifinal, joining four-time champion Iga Swiatek as the only Polish women to reach this stage.
