Today marks 150 years since Denmark's world-famous fairy tale author died. In a new book, literature professor Anne-Marie Mai looks at H.C. Andersen with fresh eyes to see how he affects our culture today.
On 4 August 1875 Hans Christian Andersen, a sacred monster of Danish literature, author of the Little Mermaid, the Snow Queen and the Little Matching Daughter, disappeared. At 11:04 a.m. on Monday, Danish churches carilloned in his memory. A series of demonstrations, programmed under the name Andersen Forever, are scheduled until autumn to celebrate the writer.
