Church explosion in upstate New York injures 5 people, including firefighters

Five people, including four firefighters and the pastor, were hospitalized after a propane-fueled furnace explosion severely damaged a Boonville church, officials said.

  • On Tuesday morning, an explosion at Abundant Life Fellowship Church on State Route 12 in Boonville left five people injured, New York State Police said.
  • Responders arrived around 10:23 a.m. after reports of a gas odor, and congregants said they called a propane company about a suspected leak; the building was heated by propane cylinders.
  • A Boonville firefighter entered the church during the response and was inside when the explosion occurred; the firefighter and one civilian are in critical condition at Wynn Hospital, Utica.
  • Officials said the church sustained catastrophic damage and is considered destroyed, and authorities secured the scene with no indication of criminal activity, closing roads at Potato Hill Road and Kerwin Road.
  • Viewer-Submitted videos and photos show black smoke and flames billowing from the church, and multiple fire departments and ambulance crews remain on scene; Spectrum News 1 will provide more information.
