Christopher Nolan Reveals Why He Banned Uggs on the Odyssey Set
Nolan said the rule keeps actors in the moment and treats modern footwear as a distraction from period authenticity.
Director Christopher Nolan enforced a strict ban on Ugg boots during filming of The Odyssey, telling Gayle King on July 20 that he wants actors to 'stay in the moment,' describing the boots as 'a signifier of modernity' that disrupts immersion.
Over his career, Nolan has developed set protocols prioritizing actor concentration; he observed that comfort footwear like fluffy slippers 'can actually weirdly take you out of reality' between takes, disrupting the fictional environment.
Multiple cast members confirmed Nolan's enforcement: Anne Hathaway laughed on July 13 saying 'I did show up one day with Uggs, and he looked down and went Nope,' while Emily Blunt joked his demands resembled Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada.
Beyond footwear, Nolan bans on-set snacking, explaining 'It's like if someone's eating a bag of chips off camera' breaks the fictional world, a philosophy Matt Damon credited with comprehensive world-building across departments.
Despite his on-set restrictions, Nolan told Gayle King on Tuesday he has no issue with Uggs off-set, though the ban has become an inside joke with devotees Blunt and Hathaway while celebrities like Kate Moss and Leonardo DiCaprio remain fans.
