‘Choked me with a shawl’: Malayali student dragged, beaten by Delhi Police during NSUI protest
The zero FIR cites alleged assault, restraint and threats during a protest, and says Athira Vijayan needed hospital treatment for neck injuries.
On Thursday, Kerala Police registered a "Zero FIR" in Thiruvananthapuram concerning the alleged assault of National Student Union of India activist Athira Vijayan by Delhi Police during a protest on Tuesday at Connaught Place.
The incident occurred during a flash protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the SIR electoral roll revision process, when activists were forcibly detained and transported by police.
Vijayan alleged that police personnel struck her face, dragged her, and "tightened the shawl she was wearing around her neck," causing injuries requiring treatment at Delhi's Hardinge Hospital.
A Zero FIR permits victims to file complaints at any police station regardless of jurisdiction; officials confirmed this case will be transferred to Delhi authorities for investigation.
The allegations have intensified friction between Congress and the BJP-led Centre over police conduct and protester treatment, while investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
