Asda Relaunches Nostalgic Chocolate Bar 30 Years After High Court Battle

On Monday, August 17, Asda officially relaunched Puffin bars nationwide, priced at £1 for 8 bars. The biscuits return after nearly 30 years absent from shelves.
In 1997, McVitie's sued Asda in the High Court, claiming Puffin bars infringed its Penguin trademark. The judge allowed the Puffin name but forced packaging redesign; Asda eventually discontinued the product.
Research from Asda shows 84% of Brits are more open to trying own-brand snacks than five years ago, with 88% finding an equivalent that tastes as good as the original feels like 'a proper big win.'
Social media users celebrated the return, with one user saying, "Happy they are back." Others expressed concern, with one noting: "It's not real chocolate so I won't be buying."
Retailers are increasingly reviving discontinued products; M&S recently returned four iconic retro chocolate bars. Asda announced on social media: "Long before Caterpillar Gate, there was Bird Gate.
