Chinese state media says Nvidia H20 chips not safe for China
CHINA, AUG 10 – Chinese state media questions Nvidia's H20 chips over security and environmental issues as the company agreed to pay 15% of China sales revenue to the US government for export licenses.
- On Sunday, Beijing-based account Yuyuan Tantian warned Nvidia’s H20 chips pose security concerns and potential backdoors.
- Nvidia designed the H20 chips for China after U.S. export restrictions, and last month the Trump administration reversed a sales ban under a 15% revenue-share deal.
- Alongside regulator scrutiny, People’s Daily urged Nvidia to provide "convincing security proofs" for H20 chips, after China’s cyberspace watchdog summoned Nvidia on July 31 to probe backdoor risks.
- Nvidia denied the backdoor allegations, asserting its H20 chips contain no 'kill switches' or spyware and meet U.S. export laws.
- Over the past quarter, a billion dollars' worth of GPUs sold despite security concerns from Yuyuan Tantian, with Nvidia facing increasing competition from Huawei Technologies, Cambricon and Hygon.
