China Sends Aircraft Carrier Liaoning to Western Pacific
Beijing said the drills follow an annual training plan and are not directed at any country, while Japan said it will monitor the exercises closely.
On Wednesday, the Chinese Navy announced it deployed the Liaoning aircraft carrier to the Western Pacific for exercises organized under an "annual routine training plan" to enhance "realistic training level" and "capabilities to execute missions."
Beijing stated the exercises comply with international law and target no specific country, though the Chinese Navy has increasingly sent forces deep into the Western Pacific in recent years, triggering concern in Tokyo.
Japanese defense officials view the area as an exposed flank, with increased drill tempo prompting a rise in close encounters between Chinese forces and the Self-Defense Forces, including about 170 aircraft takeoffs and landings in June.
Past deployments have triggered friction, with Beijing accusing Tokyo of "dangerous" close-in reconnaissance and "provocative harassment" during drills, while Tokyo warned that warplane maneuvers near Japanese aircraft last year risked potential collisions.
Policymakers in Tokyo view any Chinese moves against Taiwan as an existential threat to Japan, as the Joint Staff Office pledged to maintain professional surveillance of surrounding waters and airspace amid the regional tensions.
