China's Giant Telescope Captures First Clear Evidence of Fast Radio Burst Origins
- An international research team found evidence for a binary origin of fast radio bursts using China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope in Guizhou Province.
- Wu Xuefeng from the Purple Mountain Observatory explained that FRBs release energy equivalent to the total radiation from the Sun over a week.
- The team monitored the repeating FRB 20220529 and observed a sudden surge in its Faraday rotation measure, indicating dense plasma interaction.
- Shi Shengcai and Duncan Lorimer praised the findings, calling them a significant step in understanding FRBs.

China's FAST telescope reveals world's first-ever evidence for origin of cosmic enigmatic flashes
Through studying the observation data of China's gigantic radio telescope located in the country's southwestern Guizhou Province, an international research team has uncovered compelling new evidence supporting a binary-system origin for at least some fast radio bursts (FRBs), one of the most enigmatic phenomena in modern astrophysics.
Repeating fast radio burst shows diverse activity and hints at magnetar origin
Using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), Indian astronomers have performed multi-frequency observations of a repeating fast radio burst designated FRB 20201124A. Results of these observations shed more light on the activity and properties of this burst. The new findings were presented in a paper published December 31 on the arXiv preprint server.
