COMMENT: China and Latin America forge ‘shared future’ as US wields coercive diplomacy

China hosted Latin American leaders at the China-CELAC Forum, pledging $9.2bn and deeper ties. As US influence fades, Beijing’s “shared future” vision gains ground, fueling a shift in global alliances and challenging Washington’s dominance.

China’s President Xi Jinping’s announcement of a $9.1 billion credit line, infrastructure investments, and visa exemptions for several Latin American countries is just the latest example of how China is taking advantage of President Donald Trump’s negative agenda in the region.

China received its main trading partners in Latin America and the Caribbean last week, in an effort to foster influence and partnerships in the region, while Beijing and Washington try to defuse their trade war. High Latin American and Caribbean officials, including the presidents of Brazil, Colombia and Chile, attended the Chinese capital at the China-CELAC Forum ministerial meeting.
