China Pushes Back Against Trump Administration Over U.S. Drone Move
The FCC's ban on new foreign-made drones, including Shenzhen-based DJI, follows national security concerns and affects 70-90% of the US commercial drone market, industry data shows.
- On December 22 the Federal Communications Commission added DJI, Autel Robotics, and other foreign-made drones and components to its Covered List, blocking new U.S. sales without FCC authorization.
- Following a White House-convened interagency review, the FCC was instructed that foreign-produced UAS pose `unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States and to the safety and security of U.S. persons`, building on President Trump's executive orders.
- Existing DJI owners can continue using approved drones and U.S. retailers selling previously authorized models, but UAS critical components like batteries and controllers may become harder to obtain.
- Local programs built on DJI equipment face constraints as the City of El Paso's drone program may stall, while public-safety agencies and the Department of the Interior warn the rule harms critical missions.
- After urging audits earlier this year, DJI said it was disappointed no mandated security audit occurred and the FCC says future approvals depend on the Department of Defense or Department of Homeland Security.
