Beijing drops visa requirement for Canadian tourists, business visitors to China
British and Canadian nationals can visit mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days until December 31, boosting people-to-people exchanges and trade ties, officials said.
- China's foreign ministry confirmed Canadian and British citizens can travel to mainland China visa-free from February 17, with the policy in effect until December 31, 2026.
- During January talks in Beijing, Keir Starmer said British businesses had been `crying out for ways to grow their footprints in China` after official January visits by UK and Canadian leaders aimed at bolstering relations.
- Holders of ordinary passports can enter mainland China for up to 30 days without a visa for business, tourism, visiting relatives and friends, exchanges or transit, aligning UK and Canada with about 50 other countries including France, Germany, Italy, Australia and Japan.
- The Office for National Statistics notes that around 620,000 travelled to China in 2024, leaving the United States as the only Five Eyes nation requiring visas.
- Critics warned that the push to reset relations overlooks human rights and national security concerns, while Xi and Starmer agreed to deepen trade in services, healthcare, green technology and finance.
