China Hits Back at US Sanctions on Tech Giants, Restricting Its Exports to American Defense Firms
Beijing said the measures retaliate for recent U.S. blacklist additions and block dual-use exports to the firms while excluding 46 others from procurement.
- On Monday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce added 10 American firms to its export control list, while the Chinese Finance Ministry banned 46 US companies from government procurement projects.
- The Pentagon earlier this month updated its "1260H list," identifying Chinese companies Alibaba Group, Baidu, and BYD as entities allegedly aiding Beijing's military, prompting Beijing's retaliation.
- Targeted firms include Aveox Inc, Oshkosh Defense, and Ball Aerospace under export controls, while procurement restrictions affect major contractors Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing.
- Chinese authorities cited the need to "safeguard national security," though Han Shen Lin of The Asia Group suggested countermeasures appear symbolic, as most targeted companies have "little or no meaningful business exposure in China."
- Dan Wang of Eurasia Group described the move as a "model example" of how China manages mild escalation while maintaining stability, noting last month's Trump-Xi summit reset relations positively.
