China clean tech exports to cut global emissions by Brazil-sized amount in 2026
CREA said 450 million metric tons of carbon dioxide will be avoided this year as Chinese solar, wind and battery exports expand abroad.
On Thursday, the Finland-based Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air reported that China's 2026 clean-tech exports will avert 450 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, roughly equivalent to Brazil's yearly fossil fuel emissions.
The energy crisis from the Iran war is driving surging demand for renewables, prompting countries in the Global South to increase imports of Chinese clean energy equipment and decarbonize fossil-heavy grids.
Electric vehicle exports surged 61% in 2026, with the total value hitting $72.8 billion, up from $39.7 billion last year, according to research firm Atlas Public Policy; wind turbine and solar shipments also grew significantly.
Over their lifetime, these exports will avert 8,400 million metric tons of CO2, representing about 24% of annual global emissions. Lauri Myllyvirta of CREA called this a "pivot point for the outlook of global energy."
Ahead of next month's COP31 climate summit, Southeast Asia nations are increasingly adopting clean energy policies. Zero Carbon Analytics researcher Sun Chin described this trend as a "paradigm shift" in limiting regional temperature rises.
