China Building 80-Plus Launch Pads Near Nuclear Silos
Satellite images reviewed by Reuters show more than 80 launch pads and support facilities that analysts say could strengthen China’s nuclear deterrent.
Reuters reported that China is building launch pads near its nuclear missile silos, including bunkers, communication nodes, and electronic warfare facilities in remote desert areas.
Silo fields in Xinjiang and Gansu province contain more than 80 pads as China expands its arsenal, according to security analysts. Alexander Neill, an adjunct fellow at Hawaii's Pacific Forum, said the construction represents "a very considerable enhancement and diversification of China's strategic nuclear deterrent."
While China maintains a "no first use" policy, some Western diplomats warn the country could resort to a nuclear deterrent to take over Taiwan. China can also launch nuclear weapons from submarines and aircraft.
President Xi Jinping recently warned Donald Trump that mishandling the Taiwan issue could place the U.S.-China relationship in "great jeopardy" and lead to "clashes and even conflicts." Beijing views the island as territory while Washington supports Taipei.
Taiwan's government stated it saw "nothing surprising" in recent summit discussions and remained in close communication with Washington. The United States does not formally recognize Taiwan, reiterating a "One China" policy while maintaining unofficial ties with Taipei.
