NBC helicopter crash in LA kills at least three people with others injured
On Tuesday evening, an NBC4 news helicopter crashed between two commercial buildings in Chatsworth, killing three people, including a pedestrian on the ground, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The aircraft went down while covering a deadly collision involving a Metro bus and an SUV that occurred two hours earlier on Nordhoff Street, officials said.
Fifty-Six firefighters responded to the fiery wreckage, while NBC4 anchor Colleen Williams confirmed on air that the station had lost contact with its crew.
One additional person was transported to a hospital in unknown condition, while the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration announced they will investigate the crash.
The crash renews scrutiny over aerial news gathering in Los Angeles, where helicopter coverage has long defined broadcast journalism and exposed reporters to inherent airspace risks.
A helicopter used by NBC4 and Telemundo 52 journalists crashed in Los Angeles. At least three people were killed and at least two others were injured, CNN reported referring to local authorities.
The accident occurred around 19 hours (3 hours in mainland Portugal) in Chatsworth, a neighborhood in the north of Los Angeles. Helicopter covered the city's subway accident.
