Children's book from 1983 gains new popularity after TikTok video
UNM Press used two print vendors and distributor Simon & Schuster to meet demand after the 1983 title spiked in orders.
After going viral on TikTok, The Weighty Word Book is experiencing renewed demand, with the 1983 vocabulary-focused title featuring short stories and illustrations by Janice Stevens now restocked by UNM Press.
Co-Author Elissa Guralnick credited Paul Levitt for keeping the title in print through years of uncertainty, stating, "The book was supposed to be rejected, and it should have died."
To meet immediate orders, James Ayers, assistant director of UNM Press, contracted with two separate print vendors; one handled larger runs while the other provided rolling shipments.
The authors noted the recent attention reflects nostalgia among adult readers, while the sequel Weighty Words has also seen increased interest, suggesting the subject matter remains timeless.
Don Redpath, sales and marketing manager at UNM Press, said the sudden popularity provides a useful model for responding to future social media-driven surges in backlist titles.
