Amanda Mathewson Jailed for Two Years After Child Neglect Conviction
Amanda Mathewson cared for 27 children at one point and hid them from parents, court heard.
On Friday, Sheriff John MacRitchie sentenced Amanda Mathewson to two years in prison at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court for wilfully neglecting children in her care.
Between September 2023 and August 2024, Mathewson operated in Dunfermline, Fife, caring for 27 children at one point despite being licensed for only eight.
Mathewson took "various steps" to deceive parents, including requiring texts before pickups and hiding children in rooms despite claiming they had eaten "messy meals."
Sheriff MacRitchie described the conduct as a "gross abuse of a position of trust," with more than 90 victim impact statements submitted by those affected.
The Care Inspectorate previously rated Mathewson "very good" in August 2023, yet has since updated inspection procedures, noting more than 90% of Scottish childminders provide safe care.
