Man arrested over theft of historic Glasgow trophy from museum
Police Scotland said the 71-year-old was released without charge as enquiries continue into the theft of a gold trophy valued at £500,000.
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Police Scotland arrested a 71-year-old man in connection with the theft of the Lipton Cup from the Riverside Museum in Glasgow.
The 18-karat gold trophy, valued at £490,000, was taken between October 22 and October 23, 2025, though museum operator Glasgow Life withheld news until April 2026 on police advice.
Made by Tiffany, the cup was presented to Glaswegian merchant Sir Thomas Lipton in 1930 following his fifth attempt to win the America's Cup, featuring an enamelled shield and gold ropework.
Following his arrest, the 71-year-old man was released without charge as inquiries remain ongoing; Police Scotland continues to urge anyone with information regarding the theft to come forward.
Offering a £25,000 cash reward, Go Radio launched a campaign for the trophy's recovery, while the item remains listed on the Art Loss Register for global tracking.
